Garriott Road               Church of Christ

We, at Garriott Road have a very rich and full history as a congregation of the Lord's people. God has blessed us in times past and we are confident he will continue to bless us in the times to come.

The congregation moved to its present location in 1965. At that time, the street was known as "Lahoma Road", hence the congregation was known as the "Lahoma Road church of Christ." In 1976, the city changed the name of the street to honor a native son, Owen K. Garriott, Jr., who was an astronaut in the Apollo flights. The congregation then became known as the "church of Christ on West Garriott" or more simply, the "Garriott Road church of Christ."

The educational wing of the building was finished in 1977. October 16th became a day to remember. The morning contribution was about $2,400.00. A special contribution was taken and it totaled $253,004.18. This included more than 29,000 pennies and about an equal amount of nickels. The love, unity and faith had reached a peak during the preparation for the special contribution. The time is remembered because of the joy shared in the way the Lord blessed us.

The special contribtion allowed the mortgage to be paid off and the purchase of an adjoining five acres.

With the vision of a "Family Center" in mind, ground was broken on June 5, 1983. The vision was to accommodate a 10-year growth. A special "Building Fund" contribution began on October 16, 1983, and grew to $174,066.58 by our April 15, 1984...Goal Day! On that day another $101,959.13 was given. This included more than 40,000 pennies. At this point, the new foyer, kitchen, bathrooms, Fireside Room and a couple of classrooms were completed.  Again, the unity and hard work of the congregation and blessings from the Lord has allowed us the success in a 24,000 square foot vision.

The bus ministry began in 1974 but did not become a strong influence until the latter part of 1975. It was a very strong influence for many years involving adults and teens working side by side. As ministries have a way of changing, the bus ministry also changed and was discontinued.
